The front porch of this cottage faces north-northwest, which in the Cotswolds means it catches whatever the weather sends from the Bristol Channel. Eighteen months, two winters, one unusually wet spring. No rust, no bubbling, no cracks.
The mounting method is the detail I got wrong previously. Stone walls expand and contract differently from the mounting hardware. A rigid direct-to-stone mount eventually cracks at the fastening point. The ironworker used a lead plug system — expansion plugs set into the mortar joint rather than the stone face — which allows slight movement without transferring stress to the back-plate.
The Bulb Question for Outdoor Lanterns
I use a small golf-ball LED at 2700K inside each lantern. 250 lumens per fitting is enough for a porch — outdoor lanterns at full brightness near a front door create an unflattering upward-cast shadow effect on anyone standing below them. Lower lumens, warmer colour, more welcoming result.
I also put both sconces on a dusk-to-dawn photocell so they come on automatically. In winter this means they are on from half three in the afternoon, which matters for returning home in dark.
